SUSPENSIONAL LEISURE
Inspired by Eisenstein's motif of hanging objects, such as tables and boat equipment in Battleship Potemkin, I applied the idea to an affordable open-air recreational space for eating and relaxing located in my home country of Cuba, specifically at Rancho Luna Beach, all made of low-cost materials such as local wood and steel rope. In the project, the suspended structures and objects are the crux of the design. Beginning with the three structural cube scaffolds, I initially explored hanging panels and walls and then added hanging furniture and circulation to create a space that, while stable, subtly responds to the weight of its occupants.
